9:00 pm
two hour standoff between him and the police while he was staying on a dry docked boat this lasted for about two hours and finally they have arrested him he's currently in custody we are hearing that he is in need of certain medical treatment that he will be receiving a but right now in this case finally in terms of catching this guy and in terms of the hours and hours of the manhunt that continued we can certainly confirm now that he is in fact arrested and held in custody it would be interesting to see if he actually was treated the same place that many of the one hundred seventy three boston marathon bombing victims were actually treated we know that he is on his way to the hospital right now now on a stasia we heard that there was some applause at the scene is that the scene over where you are right now is there any kind of sharing anything going on. well megan because all of the attention was in fact on watertown over the last several hours where the suspect was being tracked down by police cheers did in fact there we know
9:01 pm
that information started trickling out the police sent out a tweet that they confirm to some locals that they did in fact arrest him and there was of course a loud sigh of relief by people here in boston and over in watertown just minutes away from here certainly of huge weight has been lifted off of the people shoulders who live here because they're so relieved i mean this entire town this entire area has been in fear over the last week waiting to see whether or not officials are going to be able to find the suspects whether or not they're going to be able to arrest the suspects and then when this nineteen year old on foot basically had thousands of police officers chasing him around for over twenty hours at people who are waiting to hear whether or not they're going to be able to track him down and now that this is happened of course certainly people here are very happy that this it is it has in fact come to an end and that this man is alive and will be in fact brought to justice on assess how this was obviously
9:02 pm
a very long situation that played out starting last night at about ten twenty pm when shots were heard on the mit campus leading up all the way to tonight almost twenty four hours later and if we also heard that there was a negotiator on the scene i'm seeing a lot of people walking behind you on a stasia as everything calmed down now i mean now obviously the suspect is in custody is there no more threat are people feeling more comfortable. absolutely megan of course that's the case you know i like i just mentioned fear has been just alive in this town and in the suburban areas once once people started learning that the suspect is on the loose is being hunted down by police and after several hours of a lockdown that boston surlier saw earlier today when people had to stay home mass transit was shut down businesses were shut down people were advised by officials to really you know not show face on the streets yes there are people walking around now and they're certainly very happy to be able to do that without fearing that
9:03 pm
another device could explode around the corner or that this guy might be among them and ana stasia we have a short time left but talk to me about the importance of getting this man arrested alive what kind of data information that we can extract from him and move forward. well the fact that this guy is alive megan is absolutely crucial because we're officials are going to be able to find out hopefully by intense questioning of this man exactly what the motives of war for this bombing because to so many people it was just outrageous that this took place you know peaceful city wonderful sports event that attracted dozens of thousands of people you know to celebrate running in the marathon and then this kind of tragedy occurs certainly you know this is something that's just that's just been ridiculous to people and nobody saw this coming and the fact that they're now going to be able to question this guy because his older brother was able to get away to well not get away but he died so this is
9:04 pm
the only lead really in this case right now in terms of why this even happened and what's more important is finding out now whether or not there were other people connected to these guys because there was certainly a lot of talk about whether or not these two brothers were just operating by themselves just two guys with whatever was on their mind or whether or not it was a more kind of unified group or other people were involved so this is exactly now what officials are going to try to find out and hopefully be able to prevent this in the future there are so many questions on a stock that all of us have our correspondent on of on the ground in boston and please keep us updated. well let's continue our comprehensive coverage of the manhunt for these suspects numerous family members have come out to talk about the shock and grief that they feel after finding out that these two men's were the ones that the f.b.i. was in fact searching for speaking from russia this morning the father of the two men said quote my son is a true angel joe cocker is a second year medical student at the u.s. he's such an intelligent boy we expected him to come on the holidays here they were
9:05 pm
set up they were set up i saw it on television they killed my older son. marilyn now just a short time ago the mother of the two boston suspects spoke to our colleagues in moscow she denies that her sons were ever involved here's part of that interview. grieving for my car going through here and being a mother i just do what i can say is i am pretty sure i am like a hundred percent sure that this has a set up. my my true fans are really innocent and i know that my. neither of them never never have talked about whatever they are saying about now and when what i want to say is my books most of them were my my youngest one was raised actually like raised from from atheist he was raised in america and my
9:06 pm
oldest son he is. a really really proper dude raised and in our house never nobody talked about the terrorism and my son time iran really. got involved in the region. like i really do exist politics five years ago so he stopped at following his own really really really religious aspect and he never he never told me that he he would be like on the side of jihad he was controlled by a b. i like for five three five feels that they knew what my son was doing they knew what actions. besides an internet he was going to how could this happen how could they they were conjoined every step of him and their take tell telling today but that is a terrorist act medgar evers' this is not true my two sons are innocent my oldest son who used to tell me everything every think every day every take every second
9:07 pm
day my son used to call me and act me how are you mama both of them mama will love you mama how are you we meet you it's impossible impossible for them to for both of them to do such things so i i move really really really. really caring that these. my son would kill me my son may but would keep it in secret so i would know who they put it would be you know knowing if there is anyone who would know it could be meek he would never he would never get for me he would tell me that but work never even avoid that was part of an interview with the mother of the two boston suspects she gave through r.t. moscow. now as you just heard both the father and the mother of these men are in disbelief meanwhile one of the uncles of the two suspect lives in montgomery county maryland this morning he gave an impassioned speech to reporters clearly upset
9:08 pm
about the fact that members of his own family were involved in this tragedy calling them losers so we're obviously hearing conflicting descriptions of these two suspects arcee correspondent live mall is in montgomery county with more. the massive manhunt underway.
9:09 pm
so a lot of attention. recount
9:10 pm
the lives of all party. all right so just once again to repeat the updated information the suspect the nineteen year old is in police custody on his way to the hospital so the manhunt is over the investigation is just beginning before we continue our coverage i want to make it very clear that right now we are only reporting the facts that are coming in and we are not going to speculate about the means or the motives of these two men the fact is that we don't know why these two individuals did what they did whether or not it was an isolated attack or part of a bigger network we don't know what the current connections these men have with the republic of chechnya so we want to be very careful in describing these men however we might find some of those answers now that one of them has been apprehended now
9:11 pm
that being said the chaos that played out in boston earlier this evening was undoubtedly have international repercussions i was joined earlier by walid faris he's an adviser to the anti terrorism caucus for the united states congress he broke down more about these talks and what could have motivated them. but if we ask this question if we are in the arab and muslim world they are caught in fact in saudi arabia the holiest place of sunni islam there are conduct back in pakistan so there was going to be alone of course is not the measurement what is measurement are statements made by these individuals or posted by these individuals of commitment not to the religion not to pray five times a day to an ideology and the ideology mean that separating people between infidels and other status in the caliphate the usual suspects jihadi approach which is well known in the i wonder which is not well. clarified here in the west in general terms now chechen leader wrong son cause you're also commented that the sus on the
9:12 pm
suspect earlier today i want you to take a listen to this because we don't know anything about the turnout of brothers they never lived in chechnya the media is reporting that they grew up and went to school in america so the problem is with their bringing their we regret that this deadly tragedy took place as we know better than anybody about these things and we offer our condolences so waleed on one hand he's offering his condolences but on the other he is blaming the suspects american upbringing for their alleged actions as opposed to their backgrounds outside of the u.s. what are your thoughts on that there's a lot of chaos here i never thought of breaking basically going to school in a manner that does not create your heart is i would even say russian upbringing i want to have to be very specific the fact that they are chechen or georgian or dagestan you or russian from the greater russian state has nothing to do it's what kind of ideology you were recruited from and that is the question to see what kind
9:13 pm
of internet resources they had who did they meet and it's not just about those chechens we have and i'm going to bore on and lo it had asians we had african-american we have now we see in mali in other places as the writing of ethnicities and a variety of sectarian affiliations what. brings together all of these elements if they are terrorist is an abolitionist fantasies you have isn't that was while the fairest advisor to the anti-terrorism caucus for united states congress now for more on the origins of the suspects family and the history of chechnya for those of you who don't know it i was joined earlier by john guy doc he's a president of the arch angels rope an artist's caution included a quick history lesson of chechnya and the western misconceptions of that russian region but one of the persons i think in the western world need to understand is that chechnya is a part of russia certainly going back to sixteen six people russia has been attempting to worst war stretch into then czars russia as part of the soviet union
9:14 pm
couldn't be part of the russian federation and that connection of themselves originally began with an independence oriented effort with regard to the resistance to the russian federation the soviet union collapsed they certainly thought that was their opportunity russia's war are you keep in the russian federation and it wasn't until early one nine hundred ninety s. when bin ladin themselves and kind of his top level people largely to try and again and secure the chechen the greater chechen cause for independence into the reader global jihad that al-qaeda was pursuing and. al-qaeda has continued to try and keep what hold in the chechen but never. known john from what i've been hearing in the news it doesn't really seem like u.s. intelligence agencies have previously been evaluating the chechen republic as
9:15 pm
a hotbed for american enemies obviously you're saying that al qaeda has been recruiting there won't live fact that these two men came from the surrounding area change the americans government's attitude toward the region and more specifically its military focus. well how well the u.s. government reacts and how the military react certainly isn't something that. i have any real insight into i would say that since the collapse of the soviet union december one thousand nine hundred one the united states has continued to deal with russian issues based on its old cold war paradigm and to a large degree the us regionally came out in support of the chechen cause for independence it was the enemy of my enemy is my friend paradigm and the russians continue to be perceived as inherently bad inherently evil if you will going back to the soviet era and the american perspective was that any group
9:16 pm
of people trying to rescue their independence from russia therefore must be good and this is all a significant measure of u.s. government support even to the extent of providing political asylum to one of the chechen leaders who was at the time under indictment for terrorism in russia that was john guy the president of the arch angel world. i want to stop now and take a moment to take a look at the role that social media has played in the events that have unfolded in the past few days it was on social media sites like twitter that we first heard about the boston marathon bombings those were the same science where tons of video and pictures of the aftermath being streaming in in the moments after the bombings actually happened and where the layout of the media turned to get the initial reports and the pictures since that day social media has continued to play a crucial role in the seminary thing the information about these events including earlier tonight r.t. correspondent margaret howell tells us more. we're now unraveling details about the
9:17 pm
two brothers tamela and joe hart set up the only suspects in monday's boston marathon bombing that killed three people and endured more than a hundred others the elder brother tamerlan twenty six years old was killed yesterday after a firefight with law enforcement nineteen year old your heart is still at large and considered armed and dangerous just how the social media sites like facebook and twitter clewiston to who these suspects are well the size had a heavy social media presence the younger brother dzhokhar in particular now on you tube twitter and the russian equivalent of facebook via connect the two have posted photos of themselves and uploaded videos and posted status updates jonathan ive was tweeting as recently as april sixteenth commenting on then suspects of the boston explosions and one he tweeted i'm a stress free kind of guy and the day before and they why it's god hates dead people are victims of tragedies l.o.l.
9:18 pm
those people are cooks. temple and posted drunk videos of himself jovially impersonating accents now temora said in one photo essay about boxing i don't have a single american friend and i don't understand them now that is a radical radical profits did appear on their youtube page meanwhile many facebook posts from the younger brother just seemed more typical of a nineteen year old kid for instance a list of the most important thing in his life as career and money his facebook noted he attended cambridge latin preparatory school a pretty just magnet school in boston with famous alumni like ben affleck and matt damon now he had nine friends listed this morning and last one making his social connections eight in total no girlfriend to speak of and he does list his date of birth and that he isn't married and he didn't like a quote from the koran which stated and do good indeed all loves the doers of good
9:19 pm
all the social social media accounts of tomorrow and your heart provide some insight into both brothers and trust there's little indication from looking through them that they plan to commit this act of violence in washington margaret helal r.t. again the suspect. is in place on his way to the hospital now for more on the role of social media and what it has played in the manhunt for the two individuals i was joined earlier by our team web producer andrew blake i asked him how social media is changing the way that police conduct their investigations. well you know there's a couple of ways to look at not even as much as the way the police conduct investigations but the way the world conduct investigations when the press conference was launched by the f.b.i. thursday afternoon around five o'clock actually twenty twenty six hours ago twenty five hours ago when this happened within literally seconds everyone who had any sort of an inkling to help in any way whatsoever who also had any sort of internet
9:20 pm
connection they all went online and they were all trying to put together the pieces of this puzzle that's why i mean only five hours later we pretty much knew who these people were the suspects at least we had their names we had multiple images and this just because everyone can share information so quickly that you don't have to rely on all these different agencies you have to rely on the a.t.f. and f.b.i. or even the boston police department and obviously they're doing that huge part but it's not that they're outsourcing your investigation just anyone who is interested in helping whatsoever will help especially when it's something that is this powerful something something like terrorism. but you know so this was you know absolutely instant but because of that because it was so widespread and because it moved so quickly and there was not a lot of the information that came out so quickly was was so small and so specific that a lot of people couldn't really work with too much information so we don't have that much time left but let me ask you about exactly what you're talking about in this case was social media more helpful or hurtful i mean obviously was spreading information but at the same time it was giving away police tactics and location and
9:21 pm
people are saying it was only a police tag location that we haven't actually seen their proven yet law enforcement said you know let's let's make sure that people aren't aren't ruining everything but let's you know encourage them to actually go ahead and do stuff because so many people were involved in kind of model thing this begin with people were going ahead in jumping the gun and saying well this person did it maybe this person did it in fact just today the moderator for reddit actually had to apologize because so many people in that website actually said ok we found the guy his name is and i'm going to screw this up on some altar poppy and he was a missing student who just. appeared from brown university two months ago he kind of looks like the suspect here must be him and this family this poor boy has been missing for two months his entire family was just devastated because you know the top missing their son for two months now here they have half of the internet going up and knocking on their virtual front doors saying hi your son step missing he killed everyone totally wrong you know this was totally wrong but people were engaged to to act and do something and it was
9:22 pm
a bit muddled because it was just too extreme too quickly obviously social media is wrong lucian i think the way that we do investigations that police do investigations that we get the word out and you're blake i'll r.t. weapon to start with those reports continuing with our breaking news coverage on monday we interviewed kara kim ball she was celebrating at the finish line of the boston marathon when the explosions actually went off she's on the line right now to describe the atmosphere right now in boston now that the second suspect is finally in police custody kara how do you feel right now after hearing all of this . through you i can't describe it any other way. i was actually at my apartment and walked up the street to the state house you can see people are sharing and carrying an american flag. and carol i understand that you were actually holed up in your basement apartment for two days and while this whole thing unraveled talk to me about what was going through your mind when you actually ended up doing. there is really
9:23 pm
a sense of helplessness where they told you that us and that you could do was to stay inside i worried a little bit about leaving my apartment to travel to my parents' house so i ended up we were i live on the ground level so my friends were serving me they're kind of concerns out of you know what if he's running through alleys and runs into your doors without really worried me a lot but i think the entire time i was just having wishful thinking that i would find him shortly and i certainly did and here you were going through what so many other people in the boston area are going through you were both there at the boston marathon in monday experiencing that and now you are experiencing this being holed up in your basement apartment for two days and now the sense of relief so let me ask you this what do you want to hear from the suspect what are you hoping comes from this police investigation i just really hope that with a better understanding i don't think that there's ever an excuse or
9:24 pm
a real reason for anything like this but i just hope that we find. at least something to give the families were affected some sense of closure of what happened and kara i mean we are just starting to have all this information stream in about this nineteen year old suspect we found out that he lives in the boston suburbs of the cambridge area with his brother his father called him a true angel so obviously this is different than what we had a originally thought when anyone really had a originally thought to talk about kind of how your perspective has changed or has it. so i was constantly refreshing and these sort of news sources all day they're just very confusing because i think when we initially thought that this was a more organized group i think i was more afraid to leave because i thought that there perhaps another round of things that were going to happen and that this was just sort of the first wave but as a team to be a student and
9:25 pm
a really it trish to tragic way i was almost relieved that he was in fact acting along with his brother at least what we understand now i waited a carrick and paul thank you so much for joining us stay safe and obviously i understand you are very relieved. all right for more updates from the scene honest osteosarcoma is in boston she joins us live on a safiya obviously the manhunt is over but the investigation is just beginning can you talk a little bit more about that. that's right megan you know even though people are breathing out a sigh of relief that finally the second suspect has been tracked down arrested and taken in custody now the complicated part continues really i mean the law enforcement officials and is going to have to really they're going to have to find out why these bombings took police they're going to have to investigate what the motives of war and the legal case kickstarts what we do know is because the suspect has some kind of is a need of some kind of medical treatment and has been taken to
9:26 pm
a hospital here in boston they will not be able to remove him until that happens and afterwards another thirty days has to pass for any kind of legal steps to start taking place so this is really just in the first stages and however much time it takes for them to provide medical treatment to the suspect the legal of the legal part of this whole story will only begin then and obviously everyone is breathing a sigh of relief in that community but they're also going to be holding their breath for those thirty days actually passed now on a saucy as you were just saying the suspect is headed to the hospital right now we don't know what kind of condition he was in the last time that we heard anything about his condition was before he was actually arrested there was for a course a he was had blood on his shirt and all over and there's also reports that the thermal scanner still showed heat so we knew that he was alive do you know anything more about his condition. i know we're waiting to find out more all the only thing that we've heard from officials so far that has been confirmed as that he is in fact in need of unidentified medical treatment so they're not really
9:27 pm
giving too many details right now there were reports earlier that some kind of blood trail was found around watertown where the. standoff continued for two hours just literally within the last hour it ended so these are just some of the reports but we don't really know more about his his condition right now we're certain we're going to be hit waiting to hear more of course once official makes for officials give further statements and details on the standoff itself and also of course on the suspect condition now on a saucer numerous media outlets for reporting that there was a police negotiator on hand who actually talked this suspect talked to the suspect and course him into coming out on his own free will do you have any evidence that that actually happened anything to come from this right well making that is exactly what we were hearing here on the ground as well that there was a negotiator on the ground participating because to the law enforcement officials
9:28 pm
it was extremely important that the suspect comes out alive of this this standoff that he had with police that continued for about two hours it was crucial for the investigators to be able to have this man alive and be able to question him and bring him to justice but also learn not only the motives of why these bombings took place in the first place but also just to make sure and confirm that it was just these two brothers that were behind the case and not more people are involved and that's exactly what they're going to do now that he is in custody are to correspondent honest osseous you're going to has been there covering this event since monday and she will continue to bring us updates as they come up and that's going to do it for now for more on the stories we covered go to youtube dot com slash r t america. time. wealthy british style. sometimes it's time.
